Basically, the facility has a hall of sleeping people, and because of that, directly under them is a large opening into Dreaming. Kerrand moved the engine into that opening and surrounded it with wards that autocast the transmute spell on any monsters of Dreaming that approach.
Regarding starlight, only Criff are able to absorb mana from it. However, Thoral's starlight is weaker than Vycrif's starlight, due to interference from the moon.

I wanted to: a) Create a non-black, non-white Haunt creature, b) create a creature with abilities that make it feel like it could bust out of a mine, and c) Create a creature whose Haunt ability had synergy with other traditional effects in its color (in this case, Smelt effects)
